The Donate for Free page has been closed due to the use of Thiefware by one of the featured charities, Care2 in the form of their Green Thumbs-up Toolbar. From their own FAQ:

To make sure your donations are generated automatically, the Green Thumbs-Up may replace certain link URLs (addresses) with ones that generate donations.

What this means to me is that if you have the Green Thumbs-up Toolbar installed and then buy something through one of the affiliate links in my shopping section their toolbar will overwrite the URL with my affiliate ID in it and replace it with their own. As a result my commission will be stolen by Care2. I happen to work hard on this site and I deserve to get my commission off of my own shopping pages without having it hijacked by the very charities that I list here. The small amount of commissions that we earn keep this site going.

While not all the charities which were featured on this page are guilty of the use of Scumware, there does seem to be a growing trend toward charities using Parasiteware and I am done with sending them my traffic. I also question what else a charitable organization that feels justified in stealing commissions might be up to.

Also, be advised that I am running a parasite detection script for you as you read this page. It would detect many of the parasite programs that may infest your browser and hijack my commissions. If the script had detected any of the parasite plug-ins on your browser, it would display a warning message below this paragraph:

Also, I have placed the same script detection at points of this website that will detect for them before they do any harm: the shelter directory submission page and the main shopping page.

In case you're thinking that none of this matters to you, think again. Many of the sites you visit for free information and services are supported by affiliate commissions. If these commissions continue to be stolen by scum the valuable sites you frequent will slowly disappear from the web.
